A key objective at Insite is to help land managers and the community better understand the cultural landscape. Cultural landscapes can be thought of as a cumulative record of land use and activity at a site or within a landscape system.
We seek to promote the values and fabric of heritage landscapes, to try and ensure that they do not become anonymous and inconspicuous as a result of being overlooked in land planning. We strive to ensure that development responds to the cultural and natural values of a place.
We are keenly interested in understanding the developmental ‘nuances’ in the history of a property or landscape and in cataloguing fabric which remains valuable as part of a place’s story - even if it does not meet thresholds for heritage listing.
Insite specialises in documenting historic patterns of land use and analysing how current interaction between people and place may differ from how interaction was originally intended.
Through promoting effective curtilages and visual catchments for heritage sites and fabric, we advocate the appreciation of the totality of lands which have relevance to listed places. We believe in this so as to avoid the 'fading out’ of formerly prominent landscape fabric and to avoid dislocation within heritage landscapes. By doing this, interpretability is much more achievable.
We place importance on the analysis of threats that relate to a landscape and its historic fabric. We also promote assessment of landscapes whose heritage values and fabric attributes remain unanalysed. Heritage landscape listings are compromised through lack of definitive information.
